Staerkel Planetarium to Host Sinfonia da Camera for First Time at PYGMALION

There will be four performances

The Staerkel Planetarium at СÖíÊÓƵ¹ÙÍøCollege will host Sinfonia da Camera for the first time on Saturday, September 20, part of this year's PYGMALION.

The 18-piece chamber orchestra will present an immersive audio-visual concert during four performances. Commissioned media for the event combines astronomical and geological imagery with painterly animations to mix the majesty of science with the power of mythic stories.

Featured selections include Sinfonietta by Benjamin Britten; Orbital, a new composition by Steve Taylor; and jazz-influenced La création du monde by Darius Milhaud, which portrays an African myth about the creation of the world and all life forms.

Led by world-renowned pianist, conductor, and educator Maestro Ian Hobson, the group is comprised of University of Illinois faculty, staff, and students along with distinguished regional and national freelance musicians. The chamber orchestra continues its 40-year history of performing for local audiences with a current residence at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana.

Showtimes include 3:30 p.m., 5:15 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 9:15 p.m.
